Chapter 11

“Looks like you and Darren were getting pretty cozy,” Mack said later that night after he’d pulled her in for a firm, claiming, kiss.

She felt a frisson of unease as she watched him kick off his boots and hang his jacket on a hook by the door. “We were just catching up,” she said and folded her arms across her chest. “Why, are you worried he and I are going to pick up where we left off?”

“No. I was worried Melanie was going to smash a whiskey bottle against the bar and come after you with it.”

“She might have good reason,” Paulina said ruefully as she walked into the kitchen. “Apparently Darren still has feelings for me.”

“Is that so?” There was a steely edge to his voice. “And are those feelings mutual?” His voice was flat, expressionless. But there was no mistaking the possessive glint in his eyes.

He was jealous. She had suspected it the other night, but now there was no mistaking it. The thought thrilled her enough to drown out the alarm bells that rang in her head, reminding her that under no circumstances were they supposed to feel possessive of one another.

“No,” she gave her head an emphatic shake. She walked over to him and slid her hands up his broad chest, over his shoulders to loop around his neck.

“Good,” he said and pulled her hard against him. “Because when I’m fucking a woman, I want to be sure I’m the only one she’s thinking about.”
